'KOMODO' JOE TRAN MAKES HIS FLYWEIGHT DEBUT ON SATURDAY NIGHT

Local amateur standout, Joseph Tran, will make his flyweight debut this Saturday night at The Fitz Casino in Tunica, MS.

Tran is a veteran of the V3 cage and has been ranked in the bantamweight division for quite some time.  He holds a record of 3-2 and trains at Ingram’s Martial Arts in Memphis, TN and on Saturday night he will go down a weight class to take on Trinity Swint.  We caught up with Tran and here is what he had to say about his martial arts career and this upcoming fight.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN MMA?

I started MMA because I've been doing and competing in martial arts my entire life!  I used to go to V3 shows with my friends to watch one of my best friends, Buddy Hooker fight, and thought "Wow I think I can do this too!"  Of course, due to life, I didn't get my first fight until a couple years ago!

WHAT ARE YOUR STRENGTHS AS A FIGHTER?

I'd like to think I'm a balanced fighter that can hold my own wherever the fight takes me, but I will say most of my competition experience is in Jiu-jitsu. But growing up, I did Open Style Karate tournaments until I was 22.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS FIGHT AND YOUR OPPONENT TRINITY SWINT?

I think it’ll be an exciting fight for sure.  I saw his fight with Tyler Stevens and he’s a tough opponent.  He is always moving forward, really scrappy and has tons of heart.  With that being said, I’ll be looking to go for the finish and make sure that our fight is the best one on the card.

WHERE DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE THE ADVANTAGE IN THIS FIGHT AND HOW DO YOU SEE IT GOING?

Being a long-time martial artist and having a couple more years of fighting on Trent, I think my experience will really play a factor here as well as my years of competing in high level Jiu-jitsu competitions.  As far as the fight goes, I'll be going with the flow of the fight. If it goes to the ground, great I'm ready. If it stays standing, I'm always ready to bang as people may have seen from my last fight with Michael Cribb, which was basically a Muay Thai fight.  I'm looking to show people an exciting fight with high level striking and grappling. Keep an eye out for me on the card, and I'll make sure not to disappoint!

YOU ARE MOVING DOWN A WEIGHT CLASS.  WHY DID YOU MAKE THE DECISION TO GO DOWN AND HOW IS YOUR WEIGHT CUT GOING?

I personally didn't mind fighting at 135, but in about all but one of my fights I have been the smaller fighter so due to the recommendations of a lot of people, I've decided to take a chance and make my debut at 125!  I'm hoping with the right diet and conditioning plan, I can bring the same athleticism and excitement to this next fight!

The weight cut is tough for sure!  I'm probably in the best shape of my life!  Luckily, I have a fantastic team behind me with the coaches at Pyramid Crossfit who oversee my physical conditioning and nutrition.  Also, Mandy Polk, who aside from being an excellent training partner, has been a fantastic wealth of information for the final two weeks of this cut.
