Chris Brown is a fighter that has the potential to be a household name in the near future and on October 20 he makes his V3Fights’ debut. He is currently 2-0 and fights out of the legendary gym, JacksonWink MMA where he trains with some of the top fighters in the world on a daily basis. Both Mike Winkeljohn and Greg Jackson (coaches) predict that Brown will be a UFC champion. Teammate Diego Sanchez says, “He’s the real deal. I’ve seen him dominate guys in the gym. This guy is the truth. We’re talking Anderson Silva but he can wrestle too!”
Brown is so dominant, that it’s hard for him to get fights because no one wants a piece of him. That all changes on October 20 because standing in his way is Thomas Gifford who has been dominating the lightweight division in the mid-south area and is on a four fight win streak (all finishes). We caught up with Brown and got his thoughts on this fight and his opponent.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN MMA?
I decided to be a fighter after I got jumped at a party. I fought around ten guys at once and they couldn’t drop me and I beat most of them up before gunshots ended the fight. The next day I decided I should fight. I felt that if I can fight a party then one man cannot stop me. I did some research and saw that wrestlers had a lot of success in MMA. After that I took boxing and kickboxing to clean up my stand-up game and then got into jiu-jitsu.
SO YOU’RE A WRESTLER? WHAT ARE YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS?
I was a state champion wrestler in high school back in Texas. My sophomore year my school only had a club team so I took rookie and novice state and second place in the open division in my first year of wrestling. I moved to Dallas my junior year and in my senior year I took second at 152 in 5A.
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS FIGHT ON OCTOBER 20?
I feel great about the fight. I’ve been trying to get a fight since June but no one would accept so I’m happy to finally have an opponent. I’m so excited and thankful for the opportunity!
YOU’RE 2-0 AND HE HAS A LOT MORE FIGHTS THAN YOU. DOES HIS EXPERIENCE WORRY YOU?
His experience doesn’t matter to me. I might not have a lot of fights but I have been training with the top fighters in the world for three years. Coach Wink is the one who started calling me “The Future.”
WHERE DO YOU FEEL THAT YOU HAVE THE ADVANTAGE IN THIS FIGHT?
I feel I have the advantage everywhere the fight goes. I’ve watched all his videos and I feel my stand up and ground game are better.
